U.S. will increase sanctions against Myanmar officials

U.S. will increase sanctions against Myanmar officials

The United States will tighten financial and travel sanctions on Myanmar's military government and its funders, the White House says.
President Bush will announce the moves tomorrow in a speech to the U.N. General Assembly, says Stephen Hadley, the president's national security adviser. The action comes amid a push for democracy being led by monks in the country, still commonly called Burma.
The
Associated Press writes that Hadley would not offer specifics about the financial sanctions to maintain what he called an element of surprise against those who might try to hide their assets.
The visa ban will extend to family members of key officials.
In addition to enforcing an arms embargo, the United States already restricts imports and exports and financial transactions.
