Security Tightened Ahead of Independence Day
By Saw Yan Naing

Security has been stepped up in Rangoon ahead of Friday’s 60th anniversary of Burmese independence.

Nyan Win, spokesman of the opposition National League for Democracy, told The Irrawaddy that unarmed plainclothes security men had been posted throughout the city, particularly along roads leading to the Sule Pagoda, a focal point of the September demonstrations.

Nyan Win said the NLD would hold anniversary celebrations on Friday at its Rangoon headquarters, where security had also been increased.

As Independence Day approached, an increase in underground anti-regime activities was reported. Videos with footage of the violent crackdown on the September demonstrations are being secretly distributed, together with anti-regime leaflets.
Activists are also calling for a week-long work stoppage to mark Independence Day.
